What to know when shopping vintage.

Not all old things are created equal — here’s how to shop smart and spot the difference between pre-loved, vintage, and antique treasures.

If you’ve ever wondered what exactly counts as vintage, how antiques differ, or what the word patina really means — you’re not alone.

The world of vintage and antique collecting is full of charm… and also full of terms that sometimes feel confusing or interchangeable. At Curated Living + Co., our goal is to help you shop with confidence and find pieces that speak to your story and space.

Whether you’re just beginning your journey or are a seasoned treasure-hunter, here’s a simple guide to get you started:

Vintage vs. Antique — What’s the Difference?

- We hear a lot of terms thrown around — here’s how we define them:

• Pre-Loved: Used, secondhand, but not yet vintage.

Vintage: Typically 25+ years old (some say 20, others 30 — we go by the 25-year rule).

• Antique: 100+ years old. Universally recognized as a true antique.

Of course, definitions can vary based on who you’re talking to — whether it’s an antique dealer, a vintage reseller, or your grandmother.

How to Evaluate a Vintage Piece

- Shopping vintage is part intuition, part education. Here’s what we recommend looking for:

Condition:

Most vintage pieces have lived a little — and it shows. Scratches, dents, and patina often add to the charm. We believe wear tells a story, but you should know your limits: if you’re not up for a fixer-upper, avoid project pieces.

Weight:

Older pieces are often heavier, made from solid wood, glass, brass, or iron. But don’t rely on weight alone — even particle board can be heavy. Look past the pretty veneer.

Maker’s Mark:

Flip it over. Look for stamps, labels, or engravings that tell you who made it and where. These are often signs of quality — though not every treasure will have one.

Age Indicators:

Pay attention to dovetail joints, screws, nails, and even style. These subtle clues help place a piece in time.

Quality:

Ask: Is it solid wood or a veneer? Real brass or plated? We’ve seen outdoor sets sold as wrought iron that were actually composite. When in doubt, ask the seller or trust your touch.

How We Rate Condition at Curated Living + Co.

We want you to shop with clarity and confidence. That’s why we offer detailed descriptions for every item. Here’s a quick overview of our condition ratings:

• Excellent: Minimal signs of wear, structurally sound, beautiful as-is

• Very Good: Light wear consistent with age — minor surface marks or patina

Good: Noticeable wear but still functional and visually appealing

• Fair: Flaws present, may require repair or restoration

All pieces are sold as-is, and we’re always happy to provide more details or photos. Just ask!

There really is nothing more fun than the thrill of the hunt! I hope these tips will help you find that perfect piece. Happy hunting!
